What Is the Ad Swipe File?
The Ad Swipe File is a personal collection of saved competitor ad creatives. When you spot an effective competitor ad in the Ads Library or on a keyword detail page, you bookmark it to your swipe file for future reference. Access your saved ads at Competitor Intel > Ad Swipes (/ad-swipes).
A swipe file is a classic direct marketing technique - copywriters and marketers collect examples of effective ads to analyze patterns, reference messaging approaches, and draw inspiration for their own campaigns. Surva.ai builds this collection directly from live competitor ad data so it stays current.
Data Stored Per Saved Ad
Each ad saved to your swipe file stores the following data from the moment you saved it:
- Competitor name - the brand that ran the ad
- Headline - the primary ad headline text
- Description - the ad body/description text
- Final URL - the landing page the ad directs to
- Position label - where the ad appeared (Top of page, Side, etc.)
- Performance score - Surva.ai's estimate of ad effectiveness based on how long the ad ran and how consistently it appeared
- Image URL - ad image if the creative included one (display ads)
- Date saved - when you added it to your swipe file
- Your notes - any notes you added when saving
The data is captured at the time of saving. If the competitor later modifies the ad, your saved version reflects the original creative you bookmarked.
Saving Ads to Your Swipe File
The bookmark icon appears on ad cards throughout the platform:
- Ads Library page - on every ad card for tracked competitors
- Competitor detail page - Ads tab - on each ad creative card
- Keyword detail page - Ads tab - on ads running for a specific keyword
Click the bookmark icon to save. A slide-out panel appears where you can optionally add notes about why you saved the ad (e.g., "great urgency angle", "interesting feature framing", "undercuts our pricing message"). Then click Save to Swipe File to confirm. The bookmark icon turns filled/highlighted to indicate the ad is now saved.
Viewing Your Swipe File
Navigate to Competitor Intel > Ad Swipes. The page shows all saved ads in a card grid, with the most recently saved at the top. Each card shows:
- Competitor favicon and name
- Ad headline (prominent, large text)
- Ad description text
- Final URL with a link to the landing page
- Position label badge
- Performance score indicator
- The date you saved it
- Your notes (if any were added)
Organizing and Filtering Saved Ads
Use the search and filter controls to find specific ads in your collection:
- Search by keyword - search within headline and description text to find ads about a specific topic or product angle
- Filter by competitor - see only ads from a specific brand
- Sort by date - view newest or oldest saved ads first
- Sort by performance - surface ads with the highest estimated effectiveness at the top
For organized teams, saving with consistent notes (e.g., categorizing by "pricing", "feature-led", "social proof", "urgency") makes the collection easier to browse over time.
Using the Swipe File Effectively
The swipe file is most valuable when used as an active reference, not just a passive archive:
- Ad copywriting - Before writing new ad copy, review swipes for headline structures and messaging angles that have worked for competitors in your category. Adapt proven frameworks, do not copy directly.
- Positioning analysis - Collect ads from 3-5 key competitors and review them together. What value propositions do they all emphasize? What angle does nobody use? The gap is your differentiation opportunity.
- Messaging tracking - When you save an ad and then see the same competitor change their messaging months later, the old swipe file entry shows you the before-state. This tracks their strategic evolution.
- New campaign preparation - When launching into a new market or keyword area, check if competitors are already advertising there and review their approaches before spending your own budget.
- Team reference library - Share the swipe file page with your marketing or paid search team as a living reference of what is running in your competitive landscape.
Removing Saved Ads
To remove an ad from your swipe file, click the unbookmark or delete icon on the card. This only removes it from your saved collection - the original ad data remains in the Ads Library and on the competitor's detail page. Removing from the swipe file does not affect competitive tracking in any way.
