What Are Surging Prompts?
Surging prompts are AI search queries experiencing rapid growth in search interest. These represent time-sensitive opportunities where publishing relevant content early can lock in AI visibility before competitors catch on. Surva.ai surfaces surging topics in two places: the main dashboard widget and the Prompts table sorted by trend score.
How Surge Detection Works
Surva.ai calculates a trend score (0-100) for each tracked prompt using Google Trends data. The score reflects the current momentum of search interest, not just absolute volume:
- 0-29 - stable or declining interest
- 30-59 - moderate growth
- 60-69 - strong growth
- 70+ - surging - triggers the "Hot" badge on the prompt row
The trend score captures velocity - a query with 1,000 monthly searches that doubled in the past month scores higher than a query with 50,000 monthly searches that has been flat for a year. Breakout topics (completely new queries that did not exist 6 months ago) can score 100 even with modest absolute volume.
Dashboard Surging Topics Widget
The main dashboard shows a Surging Topics widget listing the top 10 tracked prompts with the highest current trend scores. This widget updates daily and gives you a quick scan of which topics are heating up across your monitored keywords. The widget pulls from the same trend score data used in the Prompts table and ranks by score descending.
Each entry in the widget shows the prompt text, its trend score, and a small indicator showing whether it is trending up. Click any entry to jump directly to that prompt's detail page.
Finding Surging Prompts
To see all your surging prompts:
- Navigate to AI Visibility > Prompts
- Click the Trend column header to sort by trend score (descending)
- Prompts with a "Hot" badge (score 70+) appear at the top
- Look for the orange/red Hot badge in the prompt text column
You can also filter to show only surging prompts by using the search bar or tag filters if you have tagged trending topics.
Types of Surges
Not all surges behave the same way. Understanding the pattern helps you decide how aggressively to respond:
- News-driven spikes - triggered by a specific event or announcement. Often peaks within days and fades. Worth noting but usually not worth creating deep content unless the topic has lasting relevance to your business.
- Seasonal trends - predictable recurring surges tied to time of year. If you see the same surge each year, prepare content in advance of the next cycle.
- Category emergence - a new sub-category or approach is gaining mainstream attention. These sustained surges (rising steadily over weeks) are the highest-value opportunity. Early authoritative content often locks in AI citations that persist long after the surge stabilizes.
- Competitive surges - a competitor launched a campaign or product that is generating search interest in related queries. Monitor whether your competitors are appearing in AI responses for these surging prompts.
Acting on Surges Quickly
Speed matters with surging topics. Here is a rapid-response process using Surva.ai:
- Identify the surge - spot a Hot badge or see it in the dashboard widget
- Check your visibility - open the prompt detail page. Is your brand already mentioned on any platform? If gray (no visibility), you need content. If orange or yellow, you need to strengthen existing content.
- Check competitor visibility - are competitors already being cited? If yes, review the AI responses to see which of their pages is getting cited and what content they have on that topic.
- Assess relevance - is this topic genuinely relevant to your brand or a tangential trend? Only pursue surges where you can create legitimately useful content.
- Create content fast - use the Content Wizard to generate a targeted article in minutes. Select the topic from your prompt list and let the wizard research and draft the article.
- Publish and monitor - publish the content and track whether your visibility for this prompt improves on the next scan cycle (2 days for Starter/Growth, 1 day for Business)
Evaluating Sustained vs Temporary Surges
Trend data updates continuously. A prompt may show a Hot badge one week and drop back to moderate the next. Before investing significant content effort, consider:
- Has this topic been surging for more than 2-3 weeks? Sustained surges signal a lasting shift, not a one-time spike.
- Are multiple related prompts all trending up together? This pattern suggests a broader category shift rather than an isolated event.
- Is search volume also growing (not just trend score)? A surge on a 100-search-per-month topic is less valuable than a surge on a 10,000-search-per-month topic.
Use the trend chart on the prompt detail page to see historical trend data and assess whether you are looking at the beginning of a sustained rise or the peak of a temporary spike.
