Competitor Monitoring Best Practices
Effective competitor monitoring goes beyond just tracking brands. It requires a strategic approach to choosing who to watch, what to focus on, and how to translate intelligence into action. This guide walks through specific Surva.ai workflows for each part of a competitive intelligence process.
Choosing the Right Competitors to Track
Track three types of competitors for comprehensive coverage:
- Direct Competitors - brands offering the same product or service to the same audience. These are the most important to track closely.
- Content Competitors - brands competing for the same AI visibility and search rankings even if they sell different products. You may not compete for customers but you compete for attention and citations.
- Aspirational Competitors - market leaders you want to compete with in the future. Studying leaders reveals what it takes to reach the next tier.
Recommended starting setup: Add 5-10 direct competitors manually via Competitor Intel > Competitors > Add Competitor. Then check the auto-discovered competitors list - Surva.ai automatically surfaces brands from your SERP results, AI responses, and ads data. Review the AI Discovered tab weekly for emerging rivals.
Plan limits for deep tracking: Growth plans support up to 15 deep-tracked competitors; Business plans support up to 50. Allocate your deep tracking slots to your most important direct competitors. Standard tracking (AI visibility, organic rankings) applies to all competitors on all plans.
Weekly Intelligence Review Workflow
A consistent weekly review turns raw data into actionable insights. Here is a structured 30-minute workflow using specific Surva.ai features:
Monday - AI Visibility Check (10 minutes):
- Open AI Visibility > Overview and check your Share of Voice trend vs last week
- Look at the Competitors tab - which competitors gained or lost visibility since your last check?
- Click Answer Gaps and sort by priority - any new high-priority gaps appear at the top
- For each new gap, note which competitor is taking your spot and what platform(s) are missing you
Wednesday - Competitor Activity Check (10 minutes):
- Open Competitor Intel > Competitors and scan the list for recent activity badges
- For each deep-tracked competitor, check the Ads tab for new ad creatives added this week
- Check the Website tab for landing page changes - highlighted fields show what changed
- Review Ad Swipes for any new ads worth saving to your swipe file
Friday - Rankings and Content Gaps (10 minutes):
- Check Organic Search > Ranking Matrix for keywords where competitors gained positions
- Review the Organic Rankings page for your own position changes
- Note any new competitor content appearing in rankings that did not appear last week
- Plan content priorities for the following week based on gaps identified
Monitoring Competitor Ad Activity
Ad monitoring reveals competitor marketing priorities, new campaigns, and messaging experiments. Use these specific Surva.ai features:
- Ads Library tab on any competitor detail page - shows all detected ad creatives with first and last seen dates. Ads that appear for multiple weeks are working; ads that disappear quickly were unsuccessful.
- Messaging tab on competitor detail - shows AI-extracted value propositions, features, and CTAs from their landing pages. This tells you how they position themselves.
- Ad Swipe Files (at /ad-swipes) - bookmark effective competitor ads with the bookmark icon on any ad card. Build a library of proven approaches to reference when writing your own copy.
What to look for: When a competitor launches a new campaign targeting keywords you track, note the messaging angle they are testing. When they change their landing page headline, it often signals a broader strategic pivot. Both patterns appear in Surva.ai automatically.
Tracking the AI Visibility Race
The most important competitive data in Surva.ai is AI visibility comparison. Here is how to use it strategically:
- Share of Voice comparison - On the AI Visibility > Overview page, the trend chart shows all competitors' visibility lines. Track the gap between your line and the top competitor's line. Is it closing or widening?
- Platform breakdown - Expand any competitor in the Competitors tab to see which platforms they dominate. If a competitor has 60% ChatGPT visibility but only 20% Perplexity visibility, Perplexity is where you can compete more effectively.
- Answer Gaps as competitive map - Every entry in your Answer Gaps page shows which competitor is cited instead of you. Sort by competitor name to see which single competitor is blocking you most across the most prompts. That competitor's cited content should be your primary research subject.
Using Landing Page Intelligence
When deep tracking is enabled, Surva.ai crawls competitor landing pages daily. Use the Website tab on any competitor detail page to:
- See their current messaging, headline, and CTA
- Review change history to see how their messaging evolved over time
- Compare their feature claims to your own - are they emphasizing features you have but do not promote?
- Detect pricing changes immediately - a new pricing tier or discount shows up as a landing page change
Navigate to Competitor Intel > Competitors > [Competitor Name] > Website to access this data. The change detection system highlights which specific fields changed (headline, features, benefits, CTA, price) so you do not need to compare screenshots manually.
Turning Intelligence Into Action
For each type of competitive signal, here is a specific Surva.ai-based response workflow:
| Signal | Where You See It | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Competitor gained AI visibility on a prompt | Answer Gaps page | Read their cited content; create a better alternative using Content Wizard |
| Competitor launched new ads on your keywords | Competitor Ads tab | Analyze the messaging angle; test a competing approach |
| Competitor changed landing page headline | Competitor Website tab (deep tracking) | Note the positioning shift; assess whether your messaging needs updating |
| Competitor gained organic rankings | Ranking Matrix | Analyze their content; identify improvements to your competing page |
| New competitor auto-discovered | AI Discovered tab in Competitors | Review their domain; decide whether to track or exclude |
| Competitor visibility declining | AI Visibility trend chart | Identify the prompts they are losing and prioritize capturing those |
Using Automated Alerts
You do not need to manually check everything every day. Surva.ai automates several detection tasks:
- Daily Digest email - sent at 7 AM Eastern, summarizes new ads, ranking changes, AI visibility shifts, and keyword surges detected overnight
- Insights & Alerts page - generated at 8:30 AM Eastern each day, surfaces prioritized insights with difficulty scores and recommended actions
- AI Overviews detection - new AI Overview appearances are flagged automatically in your insights feed
Configure your digest preferences in Settings > Notifications. The digest covers all your tracked competitors so you stay informed without manually opening Surva.ai every day.
