What Is AI Visibility?
AI visibility is the measure of how frequently and prominently your brand appears in responses from AI-powered search engines and assistants. As more users shift from traditional search to AI tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity, your presence in these answers directly impacts brand discovery and customer acquisition. A brand that appears in 40% of relevant AI responses has a significant awareness advantage over a competitor that appears in 10%.
Surva.ai tracks your AI visibility across five major platforms:
- ChatGPT (OpenAI) - the most widely used AI assistant globally
- Perplexity - an AI search engine that cites sources in real time
- Claude (Anthropic) - a popular assistant used by professionals and developers
- Gemini (Google) - Google's AI assistant integrated with Google Search
- Google AI Overviews - AI-generated summaries appearing at the top of Google search results
How AI Visibility Is Scored
Your AI visibility score is calculated as the percentage of your tracked prompts where your brand is mentioned in the AI response. For example, if you track 100 prompts and your brand appears in 35 responses, your visibility score is 35%.
The score is displayed as a circular progress indicator on the AI Visibility dashboard and on individual prompt rows in the Prompts table. The indicator changes color based on your score level: green for 50% or above, yellow for 25% or above, orange for any positive visibility below 25%, and gray for zero visibility. These thresholds apply per-prompt on the Prompts page and aggregate to your overall brand score on the dashboard.
Visibility is recalculated on a regular scan cycle. Each scan queries all your tracked prompts across all five platforms and records whether your brand, competitors, or neither appeared in each response. Scans run every 2 days for Starter and Growth plans, and daily for Business plans.
Types of AI Visibility
Not all AI visibility is equal. Surva.ai distinguishes three types:
- Brand Mentions - the AI names your brand directly in the response text. This is the most common type and forms the basis of the visibility score.
- Citations - the AI links to your website as a source or reference. Perplexity and Google AI Overviews consistently include source citations. Citations are tracked separately on the Citations page.
- Recommendations - the AI recommends your product or service in a "you should try X" context. Recommendation mentions are highest value because they represent a direct endorsement to the user.
Platform-Specific Behavior
Each AI platform has different visibility dynamics:
- Perplexity searches the web in real time. New content on your site can appear in Perplexity responses within days. Perplexity always cites its sources, so you can see exactly which of your pages it is referencing.
- Google AI Overviews uses Google's search index. Strong organic SEO directly improves AI Overview inclusion. Schema markup (FAQPage, HowTo, Organization) helps trigger AI Overview appearances.
- ChatGPT primarily uses its training data, supplemented by real-time web browsing in GPT-4o. Established brands with strong web presence and coverage on authoritative sites (Wikipedia, industry publications, review platforms) appear more reliably.
- Claude relies on Anthropic's training data. Its responses tend to be more conservative about brand recommendations and favor well-documented, authoritative sources.
- Gemini integrates with Google's knowledge graph. Brands with Google Business Profiles, Wikipedia entries, and strong Google search presence tend to appear more in Gemini responses.
Share of Voice
Beyond your individual visibility score, Surva.ai also calculates your Share of Voice - your brand's percentage of total brand mentions across all tracked competitors for your prompts. If there are 200 total brand mentions across all platforms and your brand accounts for 50, your share of voice is 25%. Share of voice appears on the AI Visibility dashboard alongside the raw visibility score and helps you understand competitive positioning, not just absolute presence.
Why AI Visibility Matters
Users who receive a brand recommendation from an AI assistant are more likely to trust and act on it than a standard search result, because AI recommendations feel personalized and contextual. Tracking and improving your AI visibility helps you:
- Discover which queries already mention your brand and protect that visibility
- Find gaps where competitors appear but you do not (see Answer Gaps)
- Create content optimized for AI citation before competitors establish dominance on emerging topics
- Measure the impact of your GEO (generative engine optimization) strategy over time
- Track how AI referral traffic from these mentions translates to actual site visits (see AI Referral Tracking)
