Organic Search Tracking Overview

The Organic Search section tracks Google ranking positions for your brand and all tracked competitors across every prompt you monitor. It sits at /organic-search in the sidebar and gives you a complete picture of how traditional SEO performance correlates with AI visibility - because the two are more connected than most teams realize.

Organic Rankings Page

Navigate to Organic Search > Organic Rankings to see the full rankings table. For every tracked keyword, Surva.ai records the organic positions of your domain and each competitor daily.

The table shows:

  • Keyword - The tracked search term
  • Your Position - Your current ranking (1-100) or "Not ranked" if outside tracked positions
  • Change - Position movement since the previous daily check, shown with directional arrows
  • Top Competitor - The competitor currently ranked highest for this keyword
  • Search Volume - Monthly Google search volume
  • AI Visibility - Whether you and competitors appear in AI responses for this query, shown as platform icons alongside ranking data

Reading Ranking Changes

The change indicator shows movement from the previous daily snapshot:

  • Green arrow up - Position improved (moved up in results)
  • Red arrow down - Position dropped
  • Gray dash - No change since last check
  • New badge - Your domain just appeared in results for the first time for this keyword
  • Lost badge - Your domain dropped out of tracked positions

Ranking History

Click any keyword to open its detail view with a ranking history chart. The chart shows your position and competitors' positions over time with date markers for significant changes. Surva.ai stores up to 12 months of ranking snapshots per keyword.

SERP Matrix

The SERP Matrix at /serp-matrix displays a grid where rows are your tracked keywords and columns are your brand plus each competitor. Each cell shows the ranking position for that combination.

Cell color coding:

  • Green - Positions 1 to 3 (top of page 1)
  • Amber - Positions 4 to 10 (rest of page 1)
  • Red - Positions 11 to 20 (page 2)
  • Gray - Not ranking in tracked positions

Cells also show indicator badges:

  • Blue badge - That competitor is running Google Ads for this keyword
  • Pink badge - That competitor has AI visibility for this keyword

Use the matrix to instantly spot where competitors dominate and you are absent. Sort any column to see which competitor performs strongest for which keywords.

Filtering and Sorting

  • Click column headers to sort by any competitor's ranking performance
  • Use the keyword search bar to filter to specific terms
  • Use category filters if you have keywords organized by topic group
  • Export the full matrix to CSV using the export button for reporting

Why Organic Rankings and AI Visibility Are Connected

There is significant overlap between organic search performance and AI mention frequency. AI platforms like Perplexity and Google AI Overviews use real-time web search, so pages that rank highly on Google are far more likely to be cited. ChatGPT and Claude are trained on web content, so authoritative pages that earn links and rank well get referenced more often in training data.

In practice, this means:

  • Improving a page's organic ranking often improves its AI citation frequency, especially on Perplexity and Google AI Overviews
  • Pages cited frequently by AI often see organic ranking improvements due to increased authority signals
  • Gaps in organic rankings frequently correspond to gaps in AI visibility for the same keywords - a single content investment can close both
